Geroskipou Summer Regatta 2011Geroskipou is a small municipality on the south coast of Cyprus just outside of Paphos. In antiquity, Paphos was famous for its seafaring peoples and was used as a port by many civilisations throughout this island’s history. The Paphos Nautical Club and the Paphos International Sailing Club were tasked with organising the regatta which was sanctioned by the Cyprus Sailing Federation with full endorsement from the CTO, The Cyprus Tourist Organisation. It took place on the Geroskipou tourist beach over the weekend of 2nd/3rd July 2011. All sailing fraternities in Cyprus were invited and about 40 dinghies attended. Besides the Olympic class Lasers, there were Wayfarers, Laser 2000s and a General Handicap class which included a Flying Dutchman, Bosuns & Albacores. Several young enthusiasts entered with their Optimists that so many of our world-class sailors started with. Local schools in Paphos designed the official T-shirt which will was worn by all the competitors and volunteers during the regatta. The long weekend finished with a prize-giving courtesy of the Geroskipou municipality. The event had many enthusiastic sponsors who recognise the value in getting in on the ground with this first event. Principal sponsor was Hermes Airports with many local businesses also involved to promote their products and services. The organisors are proud to announce that the sponsorship will continue into 2012 with the Hermes Sailing Regatta. |
